Roberto Silvestri - born 1965
in Genoa, Italy - graduated from the Department of Architecture of the
University of Genoa in 1992 with full marks cum laude. Prior to that he
studied at the Arkitekthogskolen of Oslo, Norway with Sverre Fehn, the
Escola Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona, Spain and he attended
international seminars with Oriol Bohigas, Giancarlo De Carlo, Herman
Hertzberger, Peter Smithson and Aldo Van Eyck.
After an initial period of work in Spain, collaborating
with the Martorell-Bohigas-Mackay practice in Barcelona, Roberto Silvestri
returned to Italy to start his own firm in the field of architecture and
urban design. The main interest of the office has been devoted to public
building development, with a particular interest in the contemporary town,
for the requalification of its spaces and its outskirts, and for the quality
of the public architecture in general. Nevertheless within the office
- located in a medieval building in the historic center of Genoa - all
themes regarding architecture and urban design are equally studied. Another
deep interest is directed toward residential architecture, offices and
other facilities in general, often contracted for private clients or companies.
In 1998 Roberto Silvestri founded the "Archimede srl - Engineering
and Architecture"; a company working in the construction area and
in the services for architecture and engineering, but that he leaves two
years later to create Silvestri Architettura. Among the main works of
the practice are: the Angeli
Cemetery in Genoa, Piazza
Bausan - Via Massara dei Capitani - Piazza
Schiavone in Milan, and the Oncology
Department for Children in Palermo.
Together with the practice management, Roberto Silvestri
has always maintained a deep interest in theory of architecture and urban
design. For this reason he has a fruitful cooperative relationship with
the Department of Architecture of the University of Genoa since 1988,
when he became Assistant Lecturer in Architectural Design. Since then
he collaborates on the Composition and Project courses of the Department.
In 1998 he obtained the Research Doctorate in Methodological Problems
of Architectural Design with a final thesis titled: L'architettura dele
Piazze (The architecture of the squares). In 1998 was named Professor
in Urban Design and in 2001 Professor in Form and Construction in Contemporary
Architecture. From 1996 to 1998 was member of the editorial staff of ARC-Architettura,
Ricerca, Composizione (ARC-Architecture, Research, Composition), a magazine
produced by the Politecnico of Milan and directed by Ernesto D'alfonso.
Among the main publications are: Genoa, Projects for the Marina Walls
(Genoa, 1992); Requalification of a Suburban District in Sienna, (Florence,
1988) and Hybrid and Superimposition (Genoa, 1994).
