Mondello is a beautiful village,
next to Palermo in Sicily. An old fisherman village with a wonderful beach
that has been converted in one of the most exclusive district of the city.
But it’s grown hasn’t been designed within an organic plan
so, nowadays, it lacks in order and in architectural shape. This is visible
in the main square: a big space facing the sea, where old houses and modern
buildings are unable to give a unity to the space itself. Our project
for the waterfront started from this point. We designed an architectural
porch that could give the space the real aspect of a square. Inside this
new building, that embrace the sea, there are commercial activities and
the space within it is a traditional Italian “piazza”, with
a new life that comes from the Italian history. From this square starts
the “passeggiata”: a walkway along the sea that has been thought
as a sequence of spaces. In the different moments of the day, this part
can be a romantic place to walk, an amazing place to play on its wooden
stages, a quiet area to have an extraordinary view of the sunset…
