Designing a new home and creating it according to one’s own tastes—whether they are contemporary, characterized by LED lighting and modern materials, or rooted in the past—is an exciting and rejuvenating experience. It is an experience that is rarely forgotten over the years. When I met Riccardo, I immediately understood that, at that particular moment in his life, the creation of his new home held symbolic value beyond the functional and concrete. He was changing certain aspects of his life and faced the need to give a “physical” form to this new direction, determining the setting for his new way of being.
It was not easy at first, because I needed to deeply understand his tastes and needs, but also to encourage him to seek something that went “beyond” what he knew, what he had already seen and perceived. I had to stimulate him to move past traditional shapes, colors, and materials to find something new that was more suited to his personality. We then began choosing wall finishes, surface textures, and material consistencies together, ensuring that each had its own character and collectively created the most suitable environment for daily life. Some of these were chosen at the drawing board. Others, however, revealed themselves in all their strength, and we were in a sense “forced” to yield to their will. Such was the case with the stone walls interspersed with occasional irregular bricks, which came to light during the construction of the wall chases and literally “imposed” themselves on the project.
Indeed, faced with such a manifestation of stability, eternity, and strength, we could only accept their presence and transform them into one of the key elements of the renovation. We had already used exposed stone on interior walls in our studio, but in this case, we were looking for something even more distinctive and unique. We sought a way to make this presence even more effective. The solution was the contrast with extremely contemporary elements. Thus, we created a focal wall painted with a metallic finish by Sikkens, which we illuminated with an LED strip produced by Newlab, so that its brilliant reflection could change color according to the owner’s wishes and alter the atmosphere of the large room where the most significant part of Riccardo’s life takes place.
In this room, the kitchen is open, facing the light, the outdoors, and friends during evenings spent together. It is characterized by a central island around which people gather for a glass of wine or a beer before sitting down at the table. The LED lighting, adjustable in power, color, and intensity, allows for the perfect “temperature” for any evening, becoming a true protagonist of this home’s interior architecture.
